Top Tips for Keeping Costs Down While Having a Great Holiday

Travelling can be an expensive endeavour, especially if you plan on doing so internationally. Whether you’re away for a few weeks or a few months, the costs add up and what’s meant to be a fun-filled adventure can easily turn into a stressful situation.

But it doesn’t have to be that way! If you plan properly, you can easily find ways to save a few bucks without having to sacrifice the quality of your holiday. Here are some top tips for travelling on a budget.

  1. Create a Budget Beforehand and Stick to it

Decide on how much money you can spend while you’re away and create a realistic budget. Try to account for as many of your expenses as possible while still being relatively flexible. If you can, leave a little bit of wiggle room for opportunities or situations that arise unexpectedly.

  1. Pick Your Destinations Wisely

The most popular places are often the most expensive, but they’re not necessarily the best spots to visit. Do your research and try find places that are a little less touristy so you aren’t always paying exorbitant prices.

  1. Get Travel Insurance

Travel insurance can be a significant expense, especially considering you may not even need to claim. But trust me, it’s a small price to pay (metaphorically) to ensure that you’re covered if something does go wrong. The last thing you want to do is have to replace belongings or pay for medical expenses out of pocket, so just bite the bullet and get travel insurance.

  1. Don’t Eat Out all the Time

Eating and drinking in restaurants gets expensive, so save some money by buying groceries at local supermarkets and cooking for yourself.

  1. Ask Locals for Recommendations

By trying places that locals enjoy and frequent, you’ll not only get a more authentic experience of the area, but you’ll most likely pay less too.

  1. Be Flexible with Flight Times

Make sure you look at all your flight options across different airlines. If you can, try be flexible with regards to your flight days and times – flying at awkward times will generally be cheaper.

  1. Avoid Peak Season

Peak season is popular for a reason, but the more tourists around, the more expensive everything is. Rather, consider travel during the shoulder seasons or off-season to save cash.

  1. Get a Local Sim Card

Avoid international roaming at all costs! Always get a local sim card and data so you can browse the internet, send messages and play at a Canadian mobile casino without paying roaming rates.

  1. Book in Advance

The further in advance you book things like transport, accommodation and so on, the less you’re likely to spend. That’s not to say you shouldn’t be spontaneous too – as long as your main stops and expenses are planned ahead of time, you should be fine.

  1. Avoid Unnecessary Transport Costs

When possible and if it’s safe, avoid taking public transport or catching an Uber if you could rather take a stroll or ride a bike! You’ll see more on foot anyway.
